Parry-Romberg's Syndrome Support Group (International)

The Parry-Romberg's Syndrome is a degenerative disease thats eats away the tissues, muscles and bones of the face.
The newly founded group's goal is to find people with Romberg's disease to offer support and friendship. Although the group is still relatively small and very new, they have faith that people will contact them through this database.

Very little is still known about Romberg's....so right now, all they have is each other.

The People’s Burn Foundation’s Mission is to provide support and advocacy services to burn survivors and their families and to educate our youth and communities on burn safety and prevention.

If you or a loved one is victimized by fire, please contact the PBF for assistance resources to preserve the integrity of your family. The PBF has many programs that extend beyond the walls of the hospital to assist you.

Imagine losing all of your worldly possessions to fire. That is why the Extinguish the Need for Victims of Fire program was started in 1999, to insure that families devastated by fire would haveevery chance to begin the rebuilding process with a gentle human touch. Prior to receiving services, families participate in a program that teaches fire prevention and safety, how to develop and practice a family fire escape plan, and burn safety measures in and around the home. Through donation drives, the ETN house affords families the opportunity to shop freely for household goods, clothing and small appliances.

To accommodate an identified need of ongoing emotional support, the Foundation created The Brave Hearts’ Network, a series of events and programs throughout the year that provides several opportunities for burn survivors and family members to be involved in the community and network with one another.

Brave Hearts’ Camp is the highlight for the kids. A week long program during which counselors, professional firefighters, medical personnel, adult burn survivors and Foundation volunteers work with the children on self-esteem issues through a variety of activities. It is a psychological, rehabilitative recovery tool held exclusively for burned children in an environment of acceptance, compassion and fun.Brave Hearts’ Camp will be held July 30th through August 4, 2006 at Happy Hollow Children’s Camp in Nashville, IN. Burn survivors six to eighteen years of age, which have been hospitalized for a severe burn injury, are eligible to attend. Applications are available upon request.

Since its formation in 1991, MC Axe and the Fire Crew with Special Guest Kasey the Life Saving Dog have taught fire safety and burn prevention to more than 2 million children throughout the Midwest. The group is comprised primarily of professional firefighters who utilize a wildly energetic blend of music, video and comedy to help children bond the Kasey and the Crew to learn fire and burn safety messages.

In 2003, a team of Indianapolis painters suffered a traumatic fire. Local NBC television affiliate WTHR followed the painters’ burn injury recovery process over one year and produced an acclaimed documentary titled To Hell and Back. The Peoples Burn Foundation is proud to be the distributor of this educational documentary to every fire department in the United States. To Hell and Back and supporting educational and promotional materials will be distributed to assist state, regional, national and local organizations in addressing fire prevention and safety. Preventing burn injuries is a formidable part of the PBF’s mission. There is not better place to start prevention and safety efforts than with the firefighters who are exposed to the risk on a daily basis.

Summer Ice is the Foundation’s annual black-tie fundraising event that serves as the primary resource of support for its operational expenses associated with PBF programs. The event allows PBF to host many local community leaders, corporations and organizations represented throughout Central Indiana who support the PBF mission and its programs.

Corporate sponsorships are $2,000, which includes a table for ten, recognition in the Summer Ice program and throughout the event on monitors in the ballroom and recognition on the Foundation’s website. Prevention sponsorships are $5,000 and include the same benefits as the corporate in addition to name and logo recognition at all educational community events and education materials produced during the year, including promotional materials for PBF’s most popular program, MC Axe and the Fire Crew.

In conjunction with Burn Awareness Month in February, the Foundation holds its annual Heart Campaign. The concept is simple, buy a yellow heart for $1 and receive burn safety tips. All proceeds directly benefit the Foundation’s burn safety education programs. Many township and public schools, local restaurants, businesses and organizations participate in the campaign every year. Businesses can also participate by purchasing a corporate Heart for $250 and receive a tailored burn prevention program presented to their employees.

About Us
For over 25 years, The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, Inc. has been connecting burn survivors, their loved ones, and burn care professionals with valuable resources. The Phoenix Society is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide support to anyone affected by a burn injury through peer support, education, collaboration, and advocacy. Our programs and services provide burn survivors and those who care for them, a network of resources and opportunities for a happier, healthier, and more hopeful life.

The Society was founded by Alan Breslau, who was extensively burned in the crash of a commercial airliner in 1963. Following a visit to a child at a local burn center, Alan realized the importance of peer support for those with burn injuries and went on to establish one for the first burn support organizations in the United States. The Phoenix Society takes its name from the legendary bird that lives 500 years and is consumed by flame, but rises again, reborn from its ashes, more brilliant than before.

The Phoenix Society’s goal is to assure that all burn survivors have access to the support systems necessary for their recovery. The Society encourages and supports activities that bring survivors together to learn and grow from their common experiences. It provides emotional support and shares coping strategies with those affected by burn injuries and those who care for them. The Phoenix Society acts as an advocate for quality burn care and burn prevention at the National level. Most of the services offered by The Phoenix Society are focused on peer support and provide information and access to resources. Some of our key programs include:

The Phoenix Society’s World Burn Congress:
The World Burn Congress is an annual international congress that brings together burn survivors, their families, care givers, burn care professionals, and fire service personnel. The Congress is a collaboration between The Phoenix Society and local burn centers. It provides an international forum to encourage and facilitate an exchange of knowledge and support within the burn community. This conference provides many burn survivors the first opportunity to meet and discuss common concerns with other burn survivors. It also serves as a wonderful learning opportunity to burn care professionals to understand the issues that impact burn survivor’s lives. For individuals who are active in burn support in their community, the Congress is a networking opportunity. For others, it is a powerful life-changing event.

SOAR:
Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery program is a major initiative of The Phoenix Society. SOAR was designed by a national advisory team of health care professionals and burn survivors to provide a structured program for volunteer peer support training in the healthcare arena. The structured training program is designed to equip survivors of a burn injury and their families with tools necessary to assist others in their recovery. This training program is designed to provide insight, knowledge, and skills necessary for the peer supporter and healthcare team to support families experiencing a burn injury.

Burn Support News:
The quarterly news publication, Burn Support News, publishes articles about individuals who have made the successful transition from burn victim to burn survivor. It also offers information about services throughout the country and details about Society programs and resources. Burn Support News has a circulation of more than 10,000 and is available at our website.

Web site:
The web site, www.phoenix-society.org provides information on burn recovery and prevention as well as links to other resources such as local support groups, burn camps, and special events and programs. The ability to share our stories and interact with others who have been impacted by a burn injury is key to our site. Our chats and message board allow survivors and their families to connect.

PEG:
The Phoenix Society Educational Grant program is being established to provide scholarships to survivors to further their education. The greatest gift we can bring to young burn survivors in the new millennium is the gift of knowledge.

Toll Free Referral and Help Line:
The Society’s toll free referral and help line services are a resource that provides immediate peer support to over 250 callers each month, connecting those in need with referrals to local burn support programs.

Resource Library:
The Society holds a growing library of books, videos, and other audiovisual materials for burn survivors, caregivers, and burn care professionals. We are continually developing resources that can be used throughout the country to support survivors and their families.

Advocacy:
The Fire Safe Cigarette issue is a national effort we are working on under our advocacy role. The Phoenix Society has been involved at a state and national level in promoting legislation on this issue. New York has now passed Fire Safe Cigarette legislation. A Fire Safe Cigarette Advocacy kit developed in partnership with the American Burn Association provides tools on this topic for burn care professionals and survivors. Our efforts to mobilize our membership at a grassroots level on issues that can have a permanent impact on burn prevention and improvement in burn care our central to our mission.
