The Northern California Burn Foundation

........was created in 1986 by doctors, burn unit nurses, and firefighters, desiring to have an organization that could help burn survivors once they had left the hospital.

Since then we have had 14 consecutive camps for burn surviving children in the summer time. We keep busy during the rest of the year by focusing on the prevention aspect in the education department. When we receive calls from those who have problems we try to assist them, or direct them to those that are able to. For example when we got a call about a family that needed help because the woman burned their house down accidentally while topping off a generator with gasoline while it was still running. We went with the family and helped by clothing, and other supplies that they needed.

If someone needs money for fuel to take a burn survivor to the hospital in Sacramento we will help pay for the gas. There are all kinds of ways we will try to assist those in need during the year. We do not help in the area of medical bills.

For more information:

Ventura County Burn Support Group

This burn support group in Ventura County and is available to adults. They are now holding meetings on the first Wednesday of the month from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

We are also starting a group for young burn survivors and their families. This will be held on the last Saturday of the month from 9:00am to 11:00am

For more information please call:

The University of California-Davis Regional Burn Center

The UC-Davis Regional Burn Center, located in Sacramento, California, supports a very active monthly meeting where burn-injured survivors, family and their significant others have a safe place to discuss issues and raise questions related to their injury, recovery and rehabilitation. Over the past year we have opened our invitation to survivors of necrotizing fasciitis and their families, as we recognize they travel much of the same recovery route as burn survivors.

The meetings are currently facilitated by the UCDMC Burn Outreach Coordinator, however, topics are chosen by the participating members. The meetings are held from 7:30pm to 9:00pm on the first Thursday of each month.

Information about the meetings is published in the monthly BurnNet newsletter and can be obtained from the Burn Outreach Coordinator.

For additional information contact Debbie Kayden, RN at
The University of California, San Diego, Burn Support Group

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has a very active Burn Support Group. Monthly meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month in the UCSD Medical Center Hospital Cafeteria. The Cafeteria is located on the first floor of the hospital at 200 West Arbor Drive, San Diego, CA.
Meetings start at 6:00 PM and usually last an hour and half or two hours. We sometimes have a guest speaker on a timely subject such as nutrition, physical or occupational therapy, wearing of burn garments, or cosmetics for the burn survivor.
After the presentation we break for cookies and punch and then have questions and answers. Sometimes we just have a round-table discussion where we just go around the room and discuss what is happening in our burn recovery. Many times newer members of the group just ask questions and exchange ideas with longer term burn survivors.

For more information contact:
  • Cindy Rutter, RN at (619) 543-2328
  • Pat Umbarger at (619) 466-6291
