Burn Survivors Association - UK

The Burn Survivors Association (Registered Charity Number:1089765) founded by Terry Everitt in February 2001 is an independent association for burns survivors, their families and friends.
It aims to form a community of burn survivors in the UK, and link to the United States and other international burn survivors associations.
For burn survivors it provides a central point, a gateway to existing sites of information, a link to existing local support groups, a forum where burn survivors can express themselves.
The association will offer personal support (non professional), survivors to survivors together with contact points for professional counselling, rehabilitation care both National and Local.
The association hopes to share information about new treatments and improved treatments throughout the UK burn centres.

What is B.U.G.S.?

B.U.G.S. (Burns Unit Group Support) is a charitable support group for people who have been burned and their families/carers. The Group (Registered Charity Number: 1052284 B.U.G.S. Fund 1223) was founded in May 2000 by staff trained in burn care and an ex-patient.

When and where do the sessions take place?

We hold informal support groups every week in the Wessex Rehabilitation Centre. They coincide with the Tissue Support Clinic held in the W.R.C. at the same time. We offer support, friendship, practical information and advice. It is also possible to link into professional help and advice for therapy and treatment. We can recommend national organisations where appropriate.

Help from B.U.G.S. is offered to all current and previous patients and their families. They do not have to have been treated in Salisbury District Hospital. Patients under the care of a plastic surgeon might also find the group beneficial. All are welcome to come and have a chat over refreshments. The Group also organises outings, fun activities and newsletters during the year as well as sponsoring children to attend the National Burn Camp held yearly in Cambridgeshire every August. Everyone is also welcome to attend our occasional formal meetings.

The Burned Children's Club

.....is a fund raising Charity (No: 1062024). The funds go towards providing a burn camp where young burn survivors can have the opportunity to meet others who have been burned. To allow them to explore issues that are important to them and talk through and discuss their problems with others in a similar position.

The camp is for children between the ages of 8 to 18 years, it is staffed by volunteers which consist of nurses, police, fire fighters, surgeons, adult burn survivors, physiotherapist and many others. This ensures that the children can form a bond between them and hopefully as the years go on will be able to give them support and guidance.

We run activities such as canoeing, horseback riding where the children have to attend to their horse before riding it. As many children come from low-income families and many different ethnic backgrounds, to actually touch a horse is one of the new experiences which they can get involved in. There are arts and crafts, abseiling, wall climbing, bikes, wind surfing and many other activities. The aims of the Burned Children's Club is to provide a "stimulating camp experience" by:

  • Promoting self-esteem of the burn survivor;
  • Providing burn rehabilitation in a fun way;
  • Creating challenging opportunities;
  • To forge friendship with other burn survivors;
  • To give them confidence in dealing with their altered body image;
  • To help them develop both physically and emotionally;
  • To take them away from the pressures within home and school;
  • But most of all.......TO HAVE FUN!

The camps are held once a year (see details below) and we take away some 40 survivors and 20 volunteers. The reason we need a Burn Camp is to help the children realise that unfortunately, no matter what, their body image will never be the same. therefore we must try to help them accept this. To impress upon them that the difference is only visual. That they may continue in life knowing that their hopes and dreams are the same as other children and the courage and determination that has already got them where they are today, will help them in the future. And with time, support and most of all, encouragement, this can be achieved.

As many as one person in ten has eczema at some time in their lives. Eczema can take many forms, but is characterised by inflammation, dry and broken skin, and associated painful itching. At its most severe, the whole body can be effected by this currently incurable skin condition. Eczema can occur at any age and coping with it can cause great distress, impacting on family life, education, employment and social interaction.
The National Eczema Society (Registered Charity No: 1009671) aims to provide the quality of life for people with eczema and their carers by identifying, promoting and advocating quality care through the provision of information, support and education.
The Society provides a wide range of literature, training for healthcare professionals, holidays for severely affected children, and assistance from a welfare fund. Our Information department deals with over 25000 inquiries each year, and a network of local contacts handles many more. We also raise funds for research to identify the causes of and potential cures for eczema.

CHILDREN'S FIRE and BURN TRUST

......is a registered Charity (Charity No. 1082084 - registered number 4007007 for England and Wales) and has been established after much consultation with and the support and encouragement of leading Burns Specialists, the London Fire Brigade, the Home Office, Schools and Parents. It aims to meet twofold needs, both in the United Kingdom and Internationally, namely the long-term rehabilitation of child burn victims and the co-ordination of education for children into the dangers of fire and burns and prevention.

The first major initiatives of the Trust are:

  • Development of a Fire and Burn Prevention Programme for schools and other bodies responsible for looking after children;
  • Improve the long term rehabilitation of child burn victims and families including heightened awareness of others of the depth of physical and psychological trauma experienced by such victims;
  • Working with existing summer camps and clubs with a view to facilitating expansion of such activities to other areas within the UK;
  • Address the serious problems of scalding, a major contributor to child burns.

The Trust is the outcome of the long-established Friends of Russian Children, which, also under the active patronage of HRH Prince Michael of Kent, has worked for years with burned children in Russia. Working closely with eminent Burn Specialists from the UK and USA, Friends of Russian Children has facilitated the movement to make the Speransky Children's Hospital in Moscow, Russia's Centre of Excellence in specialist burns care. In conjunction with the London, Moscow and St. Petersburg Fire Brigades, a fire and burns awareness manual has been designed for Russian schools and, to date, has been adopted into the formal school curriculum in four major Russian cities. These are just a few of the successful initiatives which are already transforming the lives of those who have been damaged by fire and burns.
