Contact: What is B.U.G.S.? B.U.G.S. (Burns Unit Group Support) is a charitable support group for people who have been burned and their families/carers. The Group (Registered Charity Number: 1052284 B.U.G.S. Fund 1223) was founded in May 2000 by staff trained in burn care and an ex-patient. When and where do the sessions take place? We hold informal support groups every week in the Wessex Rehabilitation Centre. They coincide with the Tissue Support Clinic held in the W.R.C. at the same time. We offer support, friendship, practical information and advice. It is also possible to link into professional help and advice for therapy and treatment. We can recommend national organisations where appropriate. Help from B.U.G.S. is offered to all current and previous patients and their families. They do not have to have been treated in Salisbury District Hospital. Patients under the care of a plastic surgeon might also find the group beneficial. All are welcome to come and have a chat over refreshments. The Group also organises outings, fun activities and newsletters during the year as well as sponsoring children to attend the National Burn Camp held yearly in Cambridgeshire every August. Everyone is also welcome to attend our occasional formal meetings. Updated November 2003 |

| The Burned Children's Club
|
.....is a fund raising Charity (No: 1062024). The funds go towards providing a burn camp where young burn survivors can have the opportunity to meet others who have been burned. To allow them to explore issues that are important to them and talk through and discuss their problems with others in a similar position. The camp is for children between the ages of 8 to 18 years, it is staffed by volunteers which consist of nurses, police, fire fighters, surgeons, adult burn survivors, physiotherapist and many others. This ensures that the children can form a bond between them and hopefully as the years go on will be able to give them support and guidance. We run activities such as canoeing, horseback riding where the children have to attend to their horse before riding it. As many children come from low-income families and many different ethnic backgrounds, to actually touch a horse is one of the new experiences which they can get involved in. There are arts and crafts, abseiling, wall climbing, bikes, wind surfing and many other activities. The aims of the Burned Children's Club is to provide a "stimulating camp experience" by:
The camps are held once a year (see details below) and we take away some 40 survivors and 20 volunteers. The reason we need a Burn Camp is to help the children realise that unfortunately, no matter what, their body image will never be the same. therefore we must try to help them accept this. To impress upon them that the difference is only visual. That they may continue in life knowing that their hopes and dreams are the same as other children and the courage and determination that has already got them where they are today, will help them in the future. And with time, support and most of all, encouragement, this can be achieved. Contact: Pat Wade (Fund and camp Co-ordinator) Location: Grafham Water Camp, Cambridgeshire

CHILDREN'S FIRE and BURN TRUST
|
......is a registered Charity (Charity No. 1082084 - registered number 4007007 for England and Wales) and has been established after much consultation with and the support and encouragement of leading Burns Specialists, the London Fire Brigade, the Home Office, Schools and Parents. It aims to meet twofold needs, both in the United Kingdom and Internationally, namely the long-term rehabilitation of child burn victims and the co-ordination of education for children into the dangers of fire and burns and prevention. The first major initiatives of the Trust are:
The Trust is the outcome of the long-established Friends of Russian Children, which, also under the active patronage of HRH Prince Michael of Kent, has worked for years with burned children in Russia. Working closely with eminent Burn Specialists from the UK and USA, Friends of Russian Children has facilitated the movement to make the Speransky Children's Hospital in Moscow, Russia's Centre of Excellence in specialist burns care. In conjunction with the London, Moscow and St. Petersburg Fire Brigades, a fire and burns awareness manual has been designed for Russian schools and, to date, has been adopted into the formal school curriculum in four major Russian cities. These are just a few of the successful initiatives which are already transforming the lives of those who have been damaged by fire and burns. Contact/Donations: |
