Canadian Burn Survivor's Association

We are a newly founded Non-Profit Association, that has taken on the the fight and the rights for Burn Survivor's to gain all necessary information, education, Pshychologial, therapuetically, Surgically, etc,

My name is Donna Spence and I'm the Founder, and President of this Association, and also a Burn Survivor. I sustained 68% rd & 4th degree burns on my forehead to my upper thighs, with 12% being 2nd dgree. I was burnt only 16 month's from now (Tuesday, September 28, 1999) and I know that NO one knows what a traumatization this causes upon the emotions, physically, mentally, socially, etc, except for the Burn Survivor.

The Flicker of Hope Foundation

The Flicker of Hope Foundation is a non-profit organization created to provide educational opportunities for burn survivors, offer emotional support and practical guidance to burn survivors and their families, increase awareness of the social needs and issues of burn survivors, and give motivational reinforcement to the fire safety community.

NEED
Nationally, 30,000 children annually receive massive burn injuries affecting more than 70 percent of the body surface, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. A confidence-devastating burn injury can significantly affect their chances to live a rewarding and productive life enhanced by social interaction, education and professional development.

GOALS
General
The objectives of Flicker of Hope Foundation are to help young burn survivors achieve a measure of social confidence and meet specific educational goals. We will meet these goals by providing general support and counseling services for children up to age 14 and their families. Additional efforts for children 15-18 will focus on helping them perform well academically by supplying encouragement and mentors. A major focus of the Foundation will be to provide funds for those with financial need when they are accepted into an accredited post-secondary institution.

Academic
The opportunities afforded by scholastic achievement far outweigh the serious physical limitations imposed by fire injuries. Therefore, the Foundation will direct a substantial portion of its funding toward providing college scholarship monies for burn survivors. Such funds will cover the costs of tuition, books, supplies, and on-campus room and board. Funds will be paid directly to the institution.

Technical/Career
A further effort will be to work with seriously burned children age 16 and older who will not pursue a college education. These children are often overlooked by those providing scholarship funds but are typically unlikely to obtain adequate job skills. The Foundation will work with these children to provide trade and technical career training.

Publication
Flicker Of Hope Foundation will publish and distribute to burn survivors On A Ring And A Prayer, the autobiography of David Borowski, the Foundation’s president, which details how he managed to live a life of significant accomplishment despite experiencing the physical ravages of fire.

Re-Entry
David will work with schools to ease the move of a burned child back into the classroom by visiting with the child’s classmates ahead of his/her return and discussing with them the nature of their friend’s injuries, the recuperative process, and what they can expect when the child returns to class.

Fire Safety Community
Dave actively advocates national policies endorsed by the fire and life safety community. Since 1998, he has worked to restore the Children’s Safe Sleepwear Standard to the Flammable Fabrics Act. He gives motivational talks to firefighters and educates schoolchildren about the importance of fire safety practices in the home. He is also part of the Fairfax County, Virginia Fire and Rescue Department’s Juvenile Fire Starter Intervention Program whose goal is to redirect the inclinations of young fire starters.
